I love this virtual urban exploration....

Asylum (by Drew Geraci)

I love this virtual urban exploration. It shows the beauty and chaos of abandonment. There are so many things that we, as a people, have chosen to forget. From buildings and people to ways of living, we’ve relegated many things to the slow death of decay.

Mental institutions are particularly intriguing to me. The more I research and read about them, the more I learn that the history of asylums is a long and complicated one. This video documentation of the visual aspects of the asylum is, itself, somewhat revealing. Seeing the different items within the building, like roller skates, slightly changes my perspective on the idea of mental institutions. Even the word “asylum” has come to mean something much different over the decades since our society worked to build beautiful and ornate places of refuge for people tortured by mental illness. It has come to be associated with pain, mistreatment, archaic medicine, decaying buildings and horror films. But there’s more to the story. The idea that we could provide places of asylum is a very interesting idea. Perhaps the issue of state-provided psychiatric hospitals is more complicated than we’d like to believe.

Fortune Cookie Wisdom

Fortune Cookie Wisdom

Trainwreck by Mat Kearney

I’m past the point of returning
For you I’m ruined and broken
There is no way of me turning
You’ve got my heart in the open

I see it shrink in the distance
In the glow of your glory
And I never will miss this
Bottom line of the story

I see the ocean come crashing
Under lavender skies
I see clouds come flashing
Now tell me, who am I?

Your’re the air that I’m breathing
While I’m lying there sleeping
You’re the cool of the evening
Now you got me believing,
Singing…

Trainwreck, I’m a trainwreck for
Trainwreck, I’m a trainwreck
Trainwreck.
I’m a trainwreck for You

I’ll kiss it all with a farewell
Goodbye, how you doing
And let it echo in stairwells
All these songs of my ruin

Now watch me climb my own cross
Without a loss for these words
As I motion a moment’s silence
Let it fly with the birds

All else I got without you
Is much ado about nothing
I’d rather stand by you gone
Than on the throne of another

You had me all from the start
I count it lost every part
I’ll sing it out in the dark
You’ve got a grip on my heart

Where could I turn from you
The darkest nights, you know you’d find a way
What else have I to do
What words are there left to say

You are the air that I breathe in
Here is my heart I give
You are all of my reason
You are my reason to live

This looks awesome!
I really love this song. It contains so much love, pain, joy and resolution. The story of Bill McCarthy’s brother inspired this song. It is a tragic story, but one that McCarthy tells with a depth that can only come from having lived through so much. If you don’t know the story of We Are Augustines and McCarthy’s brother, take a few minutes to read it here.

I celebrated the end of 2011 and the beginning of 2012 with...

I celebrated the end of 2011 and the beginning of 2012 with fireworks along with tons of other people on Chicago’s Navy Pier.
